Pei-Xin Chuang’s practice explores how digital technologies transform our understanding of reality, materiality, and perception. Working across 3D scanning, game engines, video, sculpture, and painting, he examines how digital images generate new forms of materiality and viewing experience.

The Method of Entry

The Method of Entry explores the idea of the synthetic body—a body that never tires and consumes no physical energy, an inorganic body. Its defining characteristic is not merely the stiffness or inflexibility of its movements, but the way its inorganic nature eliminates the natural aspects of the body. It removes the fragile and imperfect qualities of the material body, becoming a body without pain or desire—a body without flaws, but also without lived experience. The artist scanned himself with a smartphone and transferred his body into MetaHuman. This process resembles a ritual of transformation, producing a 3D model and texture maps through which his body is rendered as an image. Through this process of synthesis and manipulation, the body loses its presence, experience, and depth. At this point, the body can hardly be called a body anymore. Yet once it loses its function as a physical vessel, it becomes capable of taking on many more forms. For the artist, this very absence of the body opens up new sculptural possibilities. These digital materials can be assembled, collaged, juxtaposed, and manipulated in relation to one another, creating a metaphorical structure around the virtual body—one that moves beyond the banality of everyday reality.
