Harvey Chiu, born in 1995, lives in Taipei City. His works focus on the sculptural representation of the human body and living organisms. By observing and understanding various materials, he overlaps the inanimate and the living to express experiences unlike any other.
Those Days in Austria Series draws on the artist’s experiences living in Austria, re-examining a state of life temporarily detached from the order of work and production. Figures dressed in swim trunks lie on the grass enjoying ice cream, their languid postures conveying a perception of time detached from efficiency and purpose. When work no longer occupies the core of life, how does an individual rediscover their body, time, and daily space? The work also reflects on contemporary society’s value norms regarding “work” and “usefulness,” viewing seemingly aimless leisure as a way of re-examining the world and one’s own existence.
