Tan-Piek Lu is a student at the National Taipei University of the Arts' Graduate Institute of Art and Design and also a Taoist priest. His works, through the appropriation of Taiwanese folk religious imagery and the use of flattened, perspective-free compositions, attempt to capture visual representations of his own ethnic group, cultural lineage, and religious philosophy, transforming these into responses to contemporary political and social issues. The works exhibited here represent the artist's first foray into conceptual art using mixed media.
The Fairy Tale of Drunk Gods features the artist himself and the owners of seven shops and bars in and around Qingguang Market, who together portray the Eight Immortals. The eight immortals, representing """"men, women, young and old, rich and poor,"""" are placed in a space filled with the atmosphere of everyday life and the flow of emotions. On this night, the owners seem to be """"possessed"""" by the Eight Immortals, using their divine hands to create nectar and nectar that carry joy, anger, sorrow and happiness. Accompanied by the images of the performers telling various strange dreams, they jointly create a once-in-a-lifetime, slightly tipsy, and spiritual journey.
