Chung-Han Yao considers creation a part of his life. From seemingly broken fluorescent tubes to vibrant light, from deconstructed sound art to structured music production, and from framed works to spatial thinking, his practice continues to evolve while exploring new possibilities in creation. Yao began working with sound in 2005. His representative works include the fluorescent light installation Flowing Coordinates and the Light-Electricity Beast series, launched in 2017. He works across multiple roles as an artist, sound creator, and DJ, and is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Shih Chien University. He received the First Prize in Sound Art at the Taipei Digital Art Festival (2008) and an Honorable Mention at the Taipei Art Awards (2017), and has participated in numerous international exhibitions and performances. In 2017, he founded LOUDBOX Studio, which received an Honorable Mention at the ADA Awards for Emerging Architects (2022) and, with Occasional Design, the Best Design Medal at the London Design Biennale (2023). He served as Artistic Director of Light Bathing – Alishan, the Mountain of the World, the main lantern of the Taiwan Lantern Festival (2026).
An Electronic Monster #51 - Midnight Music Box is a music box collectively activated by its audience. Through music and movement, past memories overlap with the present to create a new shared experience. Evoking vintage machinery and memories played on repeat, the work echoes the nostalgic spirit of nakasi culture. Familiar music from project sponsor PX Mart is remixed into electronic dance tracks, transforming recognizable melodies into a contemporary sonic experience. Sensors respond to the audience’s movements—the more energetic they become, the faster the music and the more dynamic the sound and lighting effects. At night, mist, light, electronic music, and the carousel transform the familiar amusement park into a space between a playground, dance floor, and enchanted realm.
